The Health Committee's PIP Breast Implants forum closed on 31 May 2012.
The Committee set up this online forum to hear first-hand from women who have breast implants which were manufactured by the French company Poly Implant Prothese (PIP). In March 2012 The Committee published a report on PIP breast implants and the regulation of cosmetic interventions. Since then the Committee has been monitoring how the NHS is performing in its undertakings to remove and replace failed implants, and what private providers are doing to remove and replace PIP implants which are causing concern. There is very little first-hand information about the scale of the problem or how well it is being tackled. The Committee was therefore very keen to hear about personal experiences of implant surgery from a private provider or the NHS, and how far particular concerns about implants had been addressed.
The Committee has found the testimony of the women who have contributed to the forum invaluable, and is very grateful to all those who have taken the time and trouble to post about their experiences. Since the forum was set up, the Government has issued its response to the Committee's report. The report of the review of the actions of the MHRA and Department of Health in relation to PIP implants (PDF, 650K), chaired by Earl Howe, was published on 14 May 2012. The report of the expert group set up to review existing evidence on the risks associated with PIP implants (PDF, 163K) , chaired by Sir Bruce Keogh, was published on 18 June 2012.
The Committee is to sponsor a debate on its report and the Government response on Thursday 5 July 2012 in Westminster Hall. The debate will last 90 minutes from 2.30 pm. It can be watched live on www.parliamentlive.tv, where a recording will also be available after the debate. In advance of the debate the Committee will publish a report with a summary of the comments made in the web forum. The report will be available on the Health Committee's publications page from the morning of Monday 2 July 2012.
